Nichele Van Portfleet

Nichele grew up in Sonoma County, doing gymnastics, drama, and climbing trees, until she fell in love with dancing as a teenager at the Sebastopol Ballet School. She continued studying dance at UC Irvine, eventually earning her B.A. in Theatre Arts / Dance from Sonoma State University. While there she worked closely with Nancy Lyons, Kristen Daley, and Christine Cali, as well as Liz Lerman, Scott Wells, and Paul Draper. During her final year of school she directed and choreographed her first evening-length production of experimental dance and dance-theater.

Since relocating to Oakland in 2013, she has been thrilled to work with CALI & CO dance, Joe Goode Performance Group, Mid to West Dance (Mo Miner and Kate Vigmostad), and Kristin Damrow & Company.  Along with her work as a collaborator of Hatch, she is a member of the choreographers’ collective SoCo Dance Theater, teaches dance at Sonoma State University and Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, and is the Administrative Coordinator for RAWdance in San Francisco. Most recently, Nichele presented her work at SAFEhouse for the Performing Arts as part of Resident Artist Workshop, and her new work, This Way Up, will be featured in WAH! Fest 2016. In the Fall, Nichele looks forward to beginning her graduate studies in Modern Dance at the University of Utah.
